Luc Tuymans Friday 18.02 > Sunday 08.05.2011 Centre for Fine Arts
Luc Tuymans, The Nose, 2002; oil on canvas; 11 ? x 9 * in (29.9 x 24.1 cm); Collection of Jill and Dennis Roach, © Luc Tuymans This retrospective, which has toured the US, is a co-production by SFMOMA (San Francisco) and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. It presents 75 key paintings by the Belgian artist Luc Tuymans. Dating from 1978 to the present day, these works are part of major series that the artist himself has made enter into a dialogue with each other. Employing a mixture of multimedia techniques and traditional painting, Luc Tuymans holds before us a distinctive mirror of history, memory, and media. He has worked on the consequences of the Second World War and of 11 September, as well as on postcolonialism in the Congo. These paintings could be said to resemble a mere chronicle of everyday life, were it not for the fact that they raise, under the surface, the great questions of our time.
