Lucha Libre Mexicana in Brussels?!

Next to football, lucha libre is the most popular sport in Mexico. It is also the world's greatest male fancy-dress party. The sport dates back to the early 20th century, but only became all the rage in 1942 when the Mexican superman, El Santo, the wrestler in the silver mask who was to be the icon of lucha libre for 50 years, stepped into the Arena.
At the beginning of the evening the spectators are whipped up by the presenters in order to create the right atmosphere. Then the fights begin: the participants are always divided into two teams, the técnicos, the technically skilled fighters or "goodies", and the rudos or baddies, who fight dirtier. Things always culminate in a one-on-one combat between two of the greats. Although you are well aware that much of what goes on is pure comedy, there are times when you feel you are watching a real fight to the death.
If you would like to see what a genuine lucha libre fight is like, Brussels is the place to be on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February, when BOZAR will fly in a number of the top luchadores, as part of the Mexico Festival being held to mark the bicentenary of Mexican independence.
