Hollywood is at his feet, and Brussels will probably follow suit during the BEAF. Here is JJ in 5 easy pieces.
1. Orpheus – Flight from the city
At BOZAR JJ will mainly be performing material from his most recent album. It’s first solo album for the Deutsche Grammophon label and is a beautiful meditation on darkness and light, life and death. JJ got his inspiration from the heartbreaking myth of Orpheus, just like Ovid and Cocteau before him.
2. Sicario – Convoy
Since Prisoners (2013) JJ regularly teams up with Canadian director Denis Villeneuve. Together they’ve made Arrival (2016) and the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2049. His soundtrack for Sicario (2015), more soundscape than music, makes this thriller almost unbearably tense.
3. The Theory of Everything – Forces of Attraction
Hollywood fell head over heels in love with this accessible soundtrack for the Stephen Hawking biopic. It won JJ his first Golden Globe and Oscar nomination.
4. Englabörn – Odi et Amo
JJ’s first solo album from 2002 is not a soundtrack, although it is based on the music he wrote for a play. Th clash between computer voice and sensuous strings is striking.
5. Mother! – trailer
You can find JJ at BOZAR but also in the cinema this September. He wrote the music for Hij schreef de Darren Aronovsky’s psychological horror flick Mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence (out on 13.9).
