V.S. Naipaul author – Martina Ghosh SchellhornFarrukh Dhondy

“I am the sum of my books,” stated V.S. Naipaul in his 2001 Nobel Prize lecture. “It's been like this because of my background.” Naipaul was born in 1932 in Trinidad, to which his grandfather had moved from northern India to work on the sugar plantations.
From a highly personal starting point, Naipaul writes books with a universal impact. “When I became a writer those areas of darkness around me as a child became my subjects....I had to travel to India because there was no one to tell me what the India my grandparents had come from was like.” In 1962 he spent a year travelling all over India - a journey that broke his life into two parts. He returned 27 years later.
In his reading Naipaul takes us to “his” India - both that of the past and today's.
