Coming from an interdisciplinary background, Tong Yang-tze (1942-) is known for challenging the traditional boundaries of calligraphy by mixing it with Western fine art. Silent Movement is an exhibition of works combining the “dots” and “turns” that appear in the process of calligraphy “writing”. Silent Movement is not intended to imitate any kind of musical composition, but the weight, speed and continuous movement of the dots and turns suggest not only beat and rhythm, but also a relationship between the brushstrokes and empty spaces on the paper. The interaction between solid and void, and thick and thin, invites viewers to become listeners to ‘musical’ notes in the calligraphy that are linked to the sounds of nature.
