Duke Bluebeard's Castle, op. 11, Sz. 48 Béla Bartók

Pierre Boulez is a central figure in the music of the 20th century, as a composer, conductor, and teacher. At the head of the LSO, an orchestra he frequently conducts, he once more presents a fascinating project focusing on key 20th-century composers. The programme for the second of these concerts includes, flanked by a Schoenberg opera and Bartók's only opera, a new work by Matthias Pintscher, a German composer born in 1971.

Boulez, Guest curator of the Paul Klee exhibition
Influenced by music, Paul Klee translated the fugue into his abstract painting. Pierre Boulez in turn retranscribed this into twelve-tone music when he took the lead of the serial avant-garde in the 1950s. Fifty years later, our guest curator returns to this decisive influence by adding a musical strand to the Klee exhibition and conducting several concerts at the Centre for Fine Arts.
