In the presence of the director

In his first full-length feature, the Senegalese director Mamadou Dia tells of how a small town in northern Senegal falls into the hands of a fundamentalist movement. Two brothers – one an imam, the other a prospective mayor – argue over their children’s marriage. Meanwhile, the town gradually slips into religious extremism.
Baamum Nafi won both the award for best film and the Golden Leopard for contemporary film-makers at the Locarno Festival.
