‘Economics of the future : the deficit of choice’

2019-2020

Why we need an alternative to "There is no alternative"

“There is no alternative”, Margaret Thatcher once said about the market economy. Do her words sound like an ominous threat today? Since the economic crisis of 2008, the current economic model – which has lasted for almost 40 years – has increasingly come under question, even though there is no obvious alternative at hand. Economists, therefore, are searching for signs that herald the next era. First of all, there is the matter of sustainability, but also a return to governmental intervention, the pursuit of happiness in every analysis and a revision of the whole concept of ‘work’. This autumn, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura will seek answers to these questions in the debate series Economics of the future: the deficit of choice.
