‘(De)-Radicalize!’

7 May'20

With the Boho Strings

SECONDARY SCHOOLS (3th-6th year)

Radicalisation. Few themes have stirred emotions so much in recent years. And with the recent return of various IS fighters, the failure of deradicalisation in many cases and the rise of right-wing radicalism, it is still very much a current theme. The ‘D-Radicalize!’ project goes in search of the role music can play in forming our opinions. The Boho Strings orchestra and singers Lieselot De Wilde and Laila Amezian perform western classical sounds (from Händel to Max Richter) and beautiful music from the Arabo-Andalusian musical tradition. There will be a simultaneous showing of a video by the Belgo-Moroccan film maker Moussa Sah. We see Geraldine, a Brussels mother who lost her son in Syria, and a young man becoming radicalised and looking for his place in society. ‘D-Radicalize!’ elicits questions and emotions from the students without moralising.

Prior to the concert, there is a compulsory study day in your preferred language (NL/FR) with 2 sessions for teachers:

  • one training session focusing on perception and misconceptions around Islam
  • the other training session is dedicated to dialogue skills in order to be able to discuss delicate themes in general and radicalisation in particular with a group of students.

The study day is free and is an inseparable part of the project. Therefore we ask every school taking part to delegate a teacher.

This project i.s.m. Democratic Dialogue, an initiative of Erasmushogeschool Brussel.

Annemarie Peeters in De Standaard : "The school show 'D-Radicalize' explores the reasons behind radicalization with Eastern and Western classical music. Bold and catchy."
