It is not surprising that laughter greeted the premiere in London of Stravinsky's Symphony   of Wind Instruments. This short work is not a symphony at all, as the title may suggest, but rather a collection of sounds generated by 23 wind instruments. In the 1930s, Bartók borrowed various percussion instruments from an instrument factory and experimented with them at length. When he was commissioned to write a composition for 30 string instruments and possibly also piano, harpsichord or percussion, Bartók seized the opportunity and composed his masterful Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. To conclude the programme, there is the romantic counterweight of Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto featuring the renowned German soloist Arabella Steinbacher.
