The Year 1917

Russia, 1917: Vladimir Ilyich Lenin leads the Bolsheviks to power and installs the first communist government. Shostakovich’s devastating Twelfth Symphony tells the story of this turbulent period, including a musical depiction of Lenin’s rural headquarters and the cruiser Aurora, which literally fired the first shot of the October Revolution. A counterbalance to this show of revolutionary power is provided by Gubaidulina’s spellbinding Offertorium, a unique violin concerto that rises far above the revolutionary sabre-rattling. Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits and violinist Vadim Gluzman – a student of Isaac Stern and a celebrated exponent of Gubaidulina – explore heaven and earth together.
