April 29, 2020 marks the centenary of the birth of Marcel Mariën (1920-1993), one of the key players in surrealism in Belgium.

On this occasion, the Marcel Mariën Foundation is organizing jointly with BOZAR the exhibition Marcel Mariën. Surrealism Without Painting, from April 29 to May 13, 2020.

Through a selection of one hundred works, all media combined, this event reflects the richness and diversity of Mariën's plastic work. Serious and humorous, always effective, his works tend to convey to the spectator a message whose topicality still echoes today. A committed and deeply nonconformist figure, Mariën was also the historian and publisher of surrealism in Belgium and helped to safeguard its literary and visual heritage.

In accordance with this, The Marcel Mariën Foundation, created in September 2017, extends the social object pursued by Mariën. Its activities and projects will be presented alongside the exhibition.
