On the International Day of the Imprisoned Writer, together with PEN Vlaanderen and the Independent Chinese PEN Center, we look at freedom of expression, censorship, and imprisonment in China - and at the importance of memory. According to Ma Jian, author of the novel Beijing Coma, “The tragedy of Tiananmen was a key moment in the history of the 20th century, but in China nobody is allowed to talk about it. Remembering has become a crime. Today’s Chinese are a people that asks itself no questions and has no past. They live as if in a coma, blinded by fear and the new prosperity.”
