The theatrical style of Gao Xingjian is rather narrative and free of any psychological interpretation. Influences from innovative Western playwrights such as Artaud, Beckett and Brecht are blended with
aspects of traditional Chinese opera. Gao Xingjian describes Au bord de la vie - the first play he wrote after leaving China for exile in France (1991) - as ‘at once a tragedy, a comedy and a farce’. A woman (played by Muriel Roland) tells us about herself, in the third person. A clown
“comments” on her reflections. Gao Xingjian worked intensively on this project: not only text and dramaturgy are by his hand but also the video montage of his canvasses.
