The year 2011, the bicentenary of the birth of Franz Liszt, will also see Hungary take on the presidency of the Council of the European Union. A happy coincidence, of which this concert is one delightful consequence. The concert will see Liszt and Bartók, two great Hungarian composers, performed by musicians who have this music in their blood. Zoltán Kocsis (whom we will also hear as a pianist, in March) has emerged over the years as one of today's most gifted conductors. The evening will close with Bartók's Cantata profana, one of the composer's greatest masterpieces - a work that has not been performed in Belgium for some decades.
