As a prelude to his concert, William Christie, the guest curator of the exhibition dedicated to Antoine Watteau, will discuss the period of la Régence, a time of great societal, philosophical and aesthetic change in France. He will touch on the emergence of a new social class hungry for independence and its tastes in terms of music and painting which were decidedly innovative. He will also discuss how Watteau fitted into this society and will address the question of the correspondence between the arts: are music, literature and painting various manifestations of one and the same relationship with Beauty? Is Watteau’s art archetypal of this proximity?
