Tinghir-Jerusalem: les échos du Mellah
The rediscovery of a Jewish-Berber culture

The young French-Moroccan director Kamal Hachkar lives in France but was born in Tinghir in the Atlas Mountains, where a community of Berbers used to live in which Jews and Muslims were intermingled. Fascinated by his origins, he made a documentary in which he goes in search of his roots. He travels to Tinghir, where his grandparents' story takes him back to a vanished world in which Jews and Muslims lived together. In Israel he seeks out the Jews who left Tinghir in the late 1960s; there, too, he meets an older generation of Berbers and introduces us to their Jewish-Muslim singing, voices, and stories. An impressive collective memory, presented in a film in which Hachkar also raises universal questions about migrating identities. Nothing if not topical!

The film will be followed by a discussion. The participants will be: Kamal Hashkar (director), Ruth Grosrichard (who teaches Arabic and Arab civilisations at Sciences-Po in Paris), and Joseph Chetrit (emeritus professor at the University of Haifa, a specialist in the culture and history of the Jews in North Africa).
