The Mahler Chamber Orchestra's residency closes with a moving work by the young Serbian composer Marko Nikodijevic: Cvetic, kucica… (Little Flower, Little House...), an evocation in music of the fate of a five-year-old Kosovan girl whose body was found in the Danube in 1999. Its musical material draws on Liszt's La lugubre gondola. The same theme is developed in Mahler's superb Kindertotenlieder and in his Fourth Symphony, which ends with a song about life in paradise. Vladimir Jurowski, Sophie Karthäuser, and Gerald Finley can be relied on to reveal all the inherent beauty of these works.
