The Turkish ney flute virtuoso Kudsi Erguner brings Turkish maqam and Indian raga closer to each other. The two have more in common than might appear at first sight. Both are strongly melodic modal systems of music that express an emotional state through microtones. There are historical links too as, starting in the ninth century, Turkish tribes invaded northern India and established new states there.
"Taj Mahal" is no nostalgic ode to the past, nor is it some slick crossover project, but an attempt to go back to the historical sources of two related kinds of music. For the occasion, Kudsi Erguner has surrounded himself with a number of outstanding musicians. Sandeep Das is an Indian tabla virtuoso who has already been twice nominated for a Grammy. Suhail Yusuf Khan is a young virtuoso on the sarangi (a bowed stringed instrument). The ensemble also includes other fine musicians from both traditions.
