The National Orchestra commissioned Julian Philips to compose a new work in commemoration of the First World War. In addition to being a composer of principally vocal works, this Welshman teaches at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Works by Edvard Grieg and Johannes Brahms complete the programme. In his Piano Concerto, his sole composition for his favourite instrument, Grieg combined the stylistic refinement of Mendelssohn and Schumann with the bravura of Liszt. Finally, with its darker tones and solid construction, Brahms’ Fourth Symphony would be the composer’s symphonic swansong.
