‘Meet the Writer: Drago Jančar & Stefan Hertmans’

1 Dec.'21
- 19:00

Bozar has invited two major European writers to take part in a discussion on the power of the past. Drago Jančar is known far beyond the borders of his native Slovenia, with not only dozens of novels, essays, and plays translated into twenty-one languages, but also a string of awards to his name. Historical motifs and events – including the constant succession of regimes and all the misery that goes with them – play a major role in his work. In addition to his writing, Jančar has a strong social engagement and likes to take politics to task. He will be talking to Stefan Hertmans, who turned 70 this year and is an indispensable figure in the Flemish literary world. Like Jančar, he likes to revisit the past in his novels: in War and Turpentine and The Ascent, Hertmans revisits the First and Second World Wars respectively, interweaving them with a personal narrative in keeping with a classic recipe.
This programme is being held in the context of the Slovenian Presidency of the EU.

The talk will be moderated by Staša Pavlović.
