The Maxacali, the indigenous people of Minas Gerais (Brazil) do not know the future, nor the futures. Futures exist only by looking behind them, where they come from and where they invented their cosmogonies and other knowledge. All this they pass on from generation to generation, through songs that contain their entire world.
In this way the future encountered by the Maxacali patch is linked to a location, and for Suely and Isael Maxacali it is the place where a school village is founded.
The school offers a time and a place for the re-cognition and the invention of methods for the impregnation of the memory. A place where the future exists because it is transmission of the past: resistance and invention inhabit myths in which the spirits are present and celebrated, spirits that guide the continuing existence of a community of songs, plants, animals, humans and mysteries.
For the Maxacali, the collapse of the world already happened a long time ago, more precisely with the arrival of the genocidal colonizers. But with their school, their drawings, videos and photographs, they testify to their ability to survive the end of their world.
