‘Meet the Writer: Didier Eribon - Screening Retour à Reims’

27 Apr.'22
- 19:00

As a sociologist and philosopher in French intellectual circles, Didier Eribon was known essentially as an expert on Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu until the publication of Returning to Rheims in 2009. The book is considered one of the most important and influential French works of recent decades. In this autobiographical essay, Eribon describes his youth in a working class family living in a provincial town. With a sharp eye, he writes of how the class system influenced and continues to influence the course of their lives. He also looks at the changed voting behaviour of a working class that once voted for the left but is now attracted by the National Front (today the ‘National Rally’). The book has become a contemporary classic and has been adapted for the stage on several occasions, including by Thomas Ostermeier, and has now been filmed by the French director Jean-Gabriel Périot. Before the screening, Eribon will be talking to Béatrice Delvaux.
