Yuja Wang is an inspired and nimble pianist and an exceptionally talented performer. At Bozar, she takes on the solo part in two beasts of the concert stage: Richard Strauss’ Burleske – a piece described as unplayable by the pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow – and the First Piano Concerto by one of the greatest virtuosos in Western musical history, Franz Liszt. This technically formidable work is also marked by a lyricism that the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest will bring to life in all its dramatic intensity. Under the direction of eminent Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, the orchestra will take you to Shakespeare’s Verona with symphonic excerpts from Hector Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet, a work rich in orchestral colour and virtuosity, dedicated to none other than Niccolò Paganini.
