Concrete Utopia

Martin is a young student who is subletting a room in Zagreb. Together with his fiancée Zorica, they are dreaming of an apartment of their own. However, due to the lack of money and residential space, an apartment is not so easy to find. When Martin’s landlords leave on a holiday, an opportunity will knock on the door – with various troubles ensuing.

A big commercial success upon its initial theatrical run, Branko Bauer’s bitter-sweet comedy serves as a time capsule of the 1960s society – its everyday life, popular culture, but also the frictions between ideals and reality of the city in an architectural and demographic flux.

Branko Bauer (1921 – 2002) is one of the leading Croatian directors of the socialist era. Although not always well received by his contemporaries, his films are today praised for the creative ways to depict everyday issues of the 1950s and 1960s society.
