‘The Shadow Workers - Annelein Pompe’

In collaboration with SoundImageCulture - SIC and Atelier Graphoui, Bozar is delighted to host the premiere of Shadow Workers by Annelein Pompe. The screening is preceded by A Day's Work by Nina de Vroome and followed by a Q&A with the two directors.

The Shadow Workers by Annelein Pompe is a fable-documentary in which the upside-down-pigeon named Lukaku tells us the story about Usman and the Dutch Good-for-nothing. Usman works in a night shop and can only sleep during the day when the Good for nothing works in a honey shop. Together they embody the non-stop working rhythm of the world we live in today. The bird Lukaku takes us on an anthropologic journey, reflecting on the role of dreams in the lives of these two working humans in the city of Ghent.

Annelein Pompe is a Dutch painter and filmmaker who lives and works in Brussels. She graduated from the Image & Language departement at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2011) in Amsterdam. She also participated in the Sound Image Culture (s.i.c.) program of 2016, a nomadic workplace for film and anthropology in Brussels. She frequently contributed her work to Stichting Perdu, a foundation for poetry and experiment in Amsterdam, and to the Art-Cinema OFFoff in Ghent. De Schaduwwerkers [The Shadow Workers] is her first film.

Opposite the filmmaker's window, a pair of pigeons is building a nest. Meanwhile, the opposite neighbours sweep their pavement. While the work of the neighbours is progressing, it becomes clear that the work of the pigeons is failing. But are their efforts really in vain?

SoundImageCulture - SIC is a workspace where artists, filmmakers, anthropologists can find support to realise their personal projects.

Founded in 1979, Atelier Graphoui is a collective of filmmakers, “audiovisual production atelier” and “center of expression and creativity” recognized by the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
