Every year, experienced programmers from the classical world crown two Belgian chamber music ensembles as ‘Supernovas’. In 2020, they selected Desguin Kwartet and Trio Aries. The winners’ concert at Klarafestival, catching up on a year’s delay, kicks off a Belgian tour.
The Antwerp Desguin Kwartet plays the only string quartet by the Belgian composer Peter Benoit. He composed this piece, reminiscent of the Schumann string quartets, in 1858 during a study trip through Germany, one year after winning the Prix de Rome.
Verklärte Nacht is one of Arnold Schönberg’s best-known compositions. He based this symphonic poem for string sextet on a poem by Richard Dehmel, describing a young woman’s confession to her lover that she is pregnant by another man. Trio Aries performs an arrangement of this classic by pianist-composer Eduard Steuermann.
