Guillaume Dufay’s motets and chansons are still touching, not just because of their intrinsic musical quality but also because of the meticulous precision with which he wrote them down. The complex isorhythmic motets are shaped in an almost mathematical fashion, but the audible result is emotionally astonishing. As such, the Dufay oeuvre resembles The Lamb of God by the brothers Van Eyck. It is, as it were, an aural translation of the Christian symbolism of this reredos. An ideal fit for renaissance specialist Paul van Nevel and his prestigious Huelgas ensemble.
