Head of Music

Since February 2023 and the arrival of the new CEO-Artistic Director, Christophe Slagmuylder, Bozar has been taking a new direction in terms of its artistic strategy and programming. The activities of the different artistic departments are better aligned in order to become an integral and complementary part of an overall transversal and interdepartmental way of working. As one of the two main pillars of Bozar's artistic project, the music programme is developed at the heart of a multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary house, contributing directly to Bozar's unique identity in Europe. The strength of Bozar Music’s offers a programme lies in the combination of established artists and young musicians, repertoire and contemporary creation, major stars and new discoveries. In this respect, we pay particular attention to an education programme that promotes inclusion and programming aimed at specific target groups. Are you a people manager with extensive experience in managing artistic staff? Can you develop a diverse and complex programme and audience outreach not a coherent, overarching strategy? Are you a good communicator and project coordinator and can you motivate people to work together? Then you might well be the ideal candidate to head Bozar’s Music Department!

You would be responsible for the strategic development of the Music department. You would collaborate with the CEO & Artistic Director and the music programmers to outline a medium- and long-term artistic vision aimed at achieving a high-quality program of diverse and innovative classical music concerts. In particular, you would be responsible for implementing the artistic vision and strategy in terms of audiences, partnerships and residencies.

  • You would coordinate and manage the Music Department. You would monitor the financial and operational framework to achieve a coherent music season of high quality. You coordinate, consolidate and control all operational and administrative activities within the Music Department.
  • You would promote transversal and innovative programming with a focus on Bozar’s societal themes
  • You would organize and optimize the workings of the department with a particular focus on financial and operational aspects. You would consult and liaise with the internal artistic and support departments to further develop cooperation with the various partners.
  • You would develop formats and methodologies to implement the artistic vision within the department.
  • You would manage the budget for the Music Department and ensure the necessary constructive collaboration with other artistic and operational departments.
  • You would negotiate framework contracts for the department with partners, you develop new partnerships with third parties within the framework of the artistic vision and closely follow developments in your area of expertise.
  • You would further strengthen the collaboration with the Belgian National Orchestra, De Munt/La Monnaie, other structural partners as well as structural collaborations with festivals, ensembles....
  • You would head the Bozar Music team and allocate activities. You would motivate and evaluate the members of the team. You would work closely with the music programmers and other members of Music Board, where you take the lead.
  • You would be asked to propose new concepts concerning strategic audience engagement, the framing of concerts and concert experiences developed, based on internal consultation.
  • You would work in close collaboration with the CEO-Artistic Director and be part of the artistic consultation. You would also be part of the management team and report to the CEO-Artistic Director

Your Profile

  • You have a master's degree and experience as a manager combined with an in-depth knowledge of music and a broad innovative view of all societal aspects of artistic activities.
  • You preferably have at least 8 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • You have thorough knowledge of French or Dutch and a basic knowledge of English.
  • You are audience-oriented, with a socially-engaged mindset.
  • You have experience in project and/or change management.
  • You are well organized; you know how to set priorities and you are stress-resistant.
  • You have experience in budget management and negotiations.
  • You are an inquisitive networker.
