AFROPOLITAN CONTEMPORARY ART

Yvette Mutumba est la cofondatrice et éditrice en chef du magazine Contemporary And (C&) – Platform for International Art from African Perspectives. Elle est chercheur invité principal pour le projet African Art History and the Formation of a Modern Aesthetic (2015-2018).  De 2012 à 2016, elle est curatrice au Weltkulturen Museum à Frankfurt a. M., où a été co-commissaire des expositions “Foreign Exchange”, “El Hadji Sy: Paintings, Performance, Politics” et “A Labour of Love“, cette dernière ayant été sélectionnée pour le  Global Fine Arts Award de 2016. Mutumba a étudié l’Histoire de l’Art à la Freie Universität à Berlin et est titulaire d’un doctorat de Birkbeck à l’Université de Londres. Elle a publié abondamment sur l’art contemporain vu d’un point de vue africain, ainsi que sur l’histoire de l’art mondiale et a été co-commissaire d’autres projets liés à ces sujets. Parmi ses publications récentes, on retiendra : “Notes on Art and Food in Global Times“, in: 13th Fellbach Small Sculpture Triennial (2016), A Labour of Love (2015).

 Isaac Kariuki

Isaac Kariuki is a visual Artist and writer working between London and Nairobi. His work centers on the body, internet culture, autonomy and identity. He is the founder and editor of Diaspora Drama, an almost biannual publication exploring creative people of colour with overarching themes of the internet and technology.

A. Jnr. Boakye-Yiadom

 “Je produis à travers une pratique artistique multimédias des performances hybrides dont les objets et les matières ma fabrication côtoient des objets trouvés que je combine pour créer un idiome de connectivité et de multiplicité. Mes œuvres prennent en fait la forme d’une installation qui est le théâtre d’une performance. J’intègre de plus en plus dans mon travail un intérêt profond pour l’exploration et l’évocation de réactions sensorielles.

Lerato Shadi

FR Lerato Shadi vit et travaille à Berlin. Elle est titulaire d’un BFA en Fine Art de l’Université de Johannesburg. Le magazine Art South Africa lui a consacrée un article en 2008, et en 2009 elle était une des artistes figurant dans l’ouvrage The Generational: ‘Younger Than Jesus artists-directory’ publié par le New Museum, New York. Elle a obtenu en 2010 une résidence Pro Helvetia à Berne. Sa première exposition solo Mosako Wa Seipone a eu lieu la même année au GoetheOnMain à Johannesburg. Elle a été de 2010 à 2012 membre des studios d’artistes Bag Factory à Fordsburg, Johannesburg. Elle a participé en 2012 à la Biennale Dak’art, et à la troisième Biennale internationale de Moscou. Elle a été membre de la Sommerakademie 2013 (Centre Paul Klee) et a achevé la même année un programme de résidence à l’invitation de Iniva à Hospitalfield (avec le soutien du ROSL). Sa performance Makhubu a été montrée la même année à Iniva à Londres. Shadi a obtenu en 2014 la bourse du mart stam studio de Berlin et a présenté en 2015 Seriti Se à la Gallery Wedding de Berlin. Son spectacle solo Noka Ya Bokamoso a été monté au National Arts Festival de Grahamstown en 2016. Elle a exposé la même année sa performance solo Di Dikadika Tsa Dinaledi au GoetheOnMain de Johannesburg. Elle achève actuellement un MFA à la Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee’. Elle a remporté en 2016 le prix Alumni Dignitas de l’Université de Johannesburg.

Anawana Haloba

EN Anawana Haloba (b. 1978, Livingstone, Zambia).) lives and works in Oslo and Livingstone. She completed her BA at the National Academy of Arts in Oslo in 2006 and is a graduate of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Anawana Haloba’s artistic practice is an ongoing investigation process into positions of different societies within varied political, social, economic and cultural contexts, ideological and post-independence frameworks. Her artistic practice is symbiotically linked to and through her preparatory exercise in drafting poetry in the forms of sketches from which the artist abstracts to performative based artworks within moving image, installation, and sound, while creating situations where the material culture of any given place can be probed and reconsidered within the scheme of rapidly shifting contemporary subjectivities.  Haloba’s work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions, including, National Museum of African Arts Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, USA; the Rauma Biennale, Finland; ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, Germany; Museum Berardo Collection, Lisbon, Portugal;la Biennale di Venezia, 2009; Sydney Biennale, Australia; Manifesta 7, Bolzano, Italy, the Sharjah Biennial 08 and 11, UAE. Haloba is also participating in the 32nd edition of the Bienal de São Paulo with the project “Close Up” curated by Jochen Volz, and co-curated by Gabi Ngcobo, Júlia Rebouças, Lars Bang Larsen, and Sofia Olascoaga. The 11th Shanghai Biennial Project “The Dragon King in Sleep Pride Rock” curated by Raqs Media, co curator Smooth Uguchukwu-Nzewi.

Youssouf Limoud

Youssef Limoud est un artiste et écrivain né à Ghiza en 1964. Il est diplôme du College of Fine Arts du Caire (1987) et a étudié à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Düsseldorf Art en 1991-1992. Ses toiles et ses installations ont été exposées dans diverses expositions en Egypte et à l’étranger. Il a récemment remporté le prix Leopold Senghor de Dak’art 2016 pour son installation Maqam. Il écrit des articles, principalement sur l’art, pour divers journaux et magazines arabes et a publié divers ouvrages sur l’art, l’Egypte et l’histoire, et la poésie. Limoud vit et travaille entre Bâle et Le Caire.

Heba Y. Amin

EN Heba Y.Amin is an Egyptian visual artist, researcher and lecturer. She is currently teaching at Bard College Berlin, is a BGSMSC doctorate fellow at Freie Universität, and a recent resident artist at the Bethanien artist residency program in Berlin. Amin has received many grants, including the DAAD grant and the Rhizome Commissions grant. She is the co--‐founder of the Black Athena Collective, the curator of visual art for the MIZNA journal (US), and curator for the biennial residency program DEFAULT with Ramdom Association (IT). Furthermore, Amin is also one of the artists behind the subversive graffiti action on the set of the television series “Homeland” which received worldwide media attention. Amin’s work is embedded in extensive research and a studio practice that looks at the convergence of politics, technology, and urbanism. Working with various media, her work investigates the impact of infrastructure on the human psyche through junctures, glitches and flawed memory. By combining interconnected histories, her approach problematizes the narratives situated in contested territories through the tools used to construct them. She is particularly interested in tactics of subversion and techniques used to undermine systems as well as topics surrounding critical spatial practice. Amin has had recent exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Kunstverein In Hamburg, Camera Austria, Berlin Berlinale 9thForum Expanded Exhibition, the IV Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, the WRO 15th Media Art Biennale Poland, the National Gallery of Mongolia, and the Art Museum of GotlandS weden. She also has an extensive repertoire in public speaking and has published several works. She lives between Berlin and Cairo. Amin is currently represented by Zilberman Gallery in Istanbul and Berlin.
