AFROPOLITAN CONTEMPORARY ART

Yvette Mutumba is medeoprichter en hoofdredacteur van het kunstmagazine C& - Platform for International Art from African Perspectives. Ze is een senior gastonderzoeker voor het project African Art History and the Formation of a Modern Aesthetic (2015 – 2018). Van 2012 tot 2016 was ze curator bij het Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt a. M., waar ze co-curator was voor de tentoonstellingen “Foreign Exchange”, “El Hadji Sy: Paintings, Performance, Politics” en “A Labour of Love“, genomineerd voor de Global Fine Arts Award van 2016. Mutumba studeerde Kunstgeschiedenis aan de Freie Universität van Berlijn en doctoreerde aan Birkbeck, University of London.  Ze heeft veel gepubliceerd over hedendaagse kunst vanuit een Afrikaans perspectief en over wereldkunstgeschiedenis. Ze was ook medecurator voor verdere projecten over deze kwesties. Recent publiceerde ze o.m. : “Notes on Art and Food in Global Times“, in: 13th Fellbach Small Sculpture Triennial (2016), A Labour of Love (2015).

 Isaac Kariuki

Isaac Kariuki is een beeldend kunstenaar en auteur die zijn tijd verdeelt tussen Londen en Nairobi. In zijn werk stelt hij scherp op het lichaam, internetcultuur, autonomie en identiteit. Hij is de oprichter en hoofdredacteur van Diaspora Drama, een halfjaarlijkse publicatie voor Afrikaanse creatievelingen waarin bijzondere aandacht wordt besteed aan internet en technologie.

A. Jnr. Boakye-Yiadom

‘In een multimediale artistieke benadering ontwerp ik hybridische performances waarbij voorwerpen en materialen ontstaan (zowel via archiefwerking als in het proces zelf) en kinetisch gecombineerd worden tot samenhangende, meerduidige talen. Concreet neemt een en ander de vorm aan van een installatie waarin een geïnduceerde performance plaatsvindt. In mijn werk is met de jaren een diepgewortelde interesse naar boven gekomen voor het onderzoeken en uitlokken van fysieke zintuiglijke reacties.’

Lerato Shadi

Shadi woont en werkt in Berlijn. Ze behaalde een Bachelor of Fine Ars aan de universiteit van Johannesburg. In 2008 werd een profiel aan haar gewijd in het tijdschrift Art South Africa en in 2009 werd ze opgenomen in The Generational: Younger than Jesus – Artist Directory, een publicatie van het New Museum in New York. In 2010 won ze een Pro Helvetia-residentie in Bern (Zwitserland). Nog in 2010 hield ze de solotentoonstelling Mosako Wa Seipone bij GoetheOnMain in Johannesburg. Van 2010 tot 2012 was ze lid van de Bag Factory-kunstenaarsstudio’s in Fordsburg (Johannesburg). In 2012 was haar werk te zien op de Dak’art-biënnale en de derde internationale biënnale van Moskou. In 2013 nam ze deel aan de Sommerakademie van het Zentrum Paul Klee en in datzelfde jaar werd ze door Iniva uitgenodigd voor een residentie bij Hospitalfield (met steun van ROSL). Een jaar later was haar performance Makhubu te zien bij Iniva in Londen. In 2014 kreeg ze een studiebeurs van de Mart Stam Stiftung in Berlijn. In 2015 vertolkte en toonde ze Seriti Se in Galerie Wedding in Berlijn. In 2016 bracht ze haar solotentoonstelling Noka Ya Bokamoso op het National Arts Festival in Grahamstown (Zuid-Afrika). In hetzelfde was haar solotentoonstelling Di Dikadika Tsa Dinaledi te zien bij GoetheOnMain in Johannesburg. Op dit ogenblik werkt ze een Master of Fine Arts af aan de Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee. In 2016 won ze de Alumni Dignitas Award van de universiteit van Johannesburg.

Anawana Haloba

EN Anawana Haloba (b. 1978, Livingstone, Zambia).) lives and works in Oslo and Livingstone. She completed her BA at the National Academy of Arts in Oslo in 2006 and is a graduate of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Anawana Haloba’s artistic practice is an ongoing investigation process into positions of different societies within varied political, social, economic and cultural contexts, ideological and post-independence frameworks. Her artistic practice is symbiotically linked to and through her preparatory exercise in drafting poetry in the forms of sketches from which the artist abstracts to performative based artworks within moving image, installation, and sound, while creating situations where the material culture of any given place can be probed and reconsidered within the scheme of rapidly shifting contemporary subjectivities.  Haloba’s work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions, including, National Museum of African Arts Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, USA; the Rauma Biennale, Finland; ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, Germany; Museum Berardo Collection, Lisbon, Portugal;la Biennale di Venezia, 2009; Sydney Biennale, Australia; Manifesta 7, Bolzano, Italy, the Sharjah Biennial 08 and 11, UAE. Haloba is also participating in the 32nd edition of the Bienal de São Paulo with the project “Close Up” curated by Jochen Volz, and co-curated by Gabi Ngcobo, Júlia Rebouças, Lars Bang Larsen, and Sofia Olascoaga. The 11th Shanghai Biennial Project “The Dragon King in Sleep Pride Rock” curated by Raqs Media, co curator Smooth Uguchukwu-Nzewi.

Youssouf Limoud

Youssef Limoud, in 1964 geboren in Giza (Egypte), is een kunstenaar en auteur. Hij behaalde een diploma schone kunsten in Caïro en in 1991-1992 studeerde hij ook aan de Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Zijn schilderijen en installaties waren te zien in een reeks tentoonstellingen in Egypte en het buitenland. Op Dak’art 2016 won hij de Léopold Senghor-prijs met zijn installatie Maqam. Hij schrijft in Arabische kranten en tijdschriften, hoofdzakelijk over kunst. Op zijn naam staan boeken over kunst, de Egyptische kunstgeschiedenis en poëzie. Limoud verdeelt zijn tijd tussen Bazel en Caïro.

Heba Y. Amin

EN Heba Y.Amin is an Egyptian visual artist, researcher and lecturer. She is currently teaching at Bard College Berlin, is a BGSMSC doctorate fellow at Freie Universität, and a recent resident artist at the Bethanien artist residency program in Berlin. Amin has received many grants, including the DAAD grant and the Rhizome Commissions grant. She is the co--‐founder of the Black Athena Collective, the curator of visual art for the MIZNA journal (US), and curator for the biennial residency program DEFAULT with Ramdom Association (IT). Furthermore, Amin is also one of the artists behind the subversive graffiti action on the set of the television series “Homeland” which received worldwide media attention. Amin’s work is embedded in extensive research and a studio practice that looks at the convergence of politics, technology, and urbanism. Working with various media, her work investigates the impact of infrastructure on the human psyche through junctures, glitches and flawed memory. By combining interconnected histories, her approach problematizes the narratives situated in contested territories through the tools used to construct them. She is particularly interested in tactics of subversion and techniques used to undermine systems as well as topics surrounding critical spatial practice. Amin has had recent exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Kunstverein In Hamburg, Camera Austria, Berlin Berlinale 9thForum Expanded Exhibition, the IV Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, the WRO 15th Media Art Biennale Poland, the National Gallery of Mongolia, and the Art Museum of GotlandS weden. She also has an extensive repertoire in public speaking and has published several works. She lives between Berlin and Cairo. Amin is currently represented by Zilberman Gallery in Istanbul and Berlin.
