Theatrum Affectuum werd in 2003 door de Duitse blokfluitist Andreas Böhlen opgericht. Het is gespecialiseerd in muziek uit het 17e- en 18e-eeuwse Italië en Duitsland en laat het barokrepertoire op een frisse, energieke wijze klinken, alsof de muziek pas gisteren werd geschreven. In 2015 verscheen bij Aeolus hun recentste cd, Nicola Matteis: Most Ravishing Things, waarin de Napolitaanse componist en virtuoze improvisator centraal staat. Het is geen toeval dat uitgerekend deze figuur Theatrum Affectuum inspireerde: Andreas Böhlen is immers naast oude-muziekspecialist ook een talentvolle improvisator en saxofonist.
