St John Passion, BWV 245 Johann Sebastian Bach
Thirty years ago Masaaki Suzuki founded Bach Collegium Japan, which he heads to this day. Together they went on a wonderful journey through the whole of Bach’s oeuvre, with extremely favourable reviews from audiences at home and abroad. The clarity, austerity and spiritual power for which Masaaki is famed are appropriate to this performance of Bach’s ‘small’ passion. The St John Passion is very direct and has sometimes been compared to an opera. The actions and story move along at a pace, the evangelist is close to the action and the disconcertingly simple choral ending forms a serene climax.
