Cine-concert: Modern Times

Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège

2027 is the 100th anniversary of films with sound! Chaplin wanted Modern Times to be his first talkie in 1936, but it ended up with no dialogue. He only added sound affects and a few songs, including the famous Smile. Convinced that the ‘Little Tramp’ would lose his universality if his voice was heard, Chaplin made this film the character’s last appearance. The result is a subversive masterpiece – a critical perspective on the absurdity of industrialisation – with music composed by Chaplin himself, who was also an excellent violinist. Fifty years after his death, the OPRL pays tribute with a film concert in which his music will be performed live.
