Both Directions at Once

To mark the centenary of John Coltrane’s birth, five leading figures from the world of contemporary jazz pay tribute to his vision and legacy. An impressive all-star quintet performs under the leadership of luminary saxophonist Joe Lovano, renowned for his lyrical improvisations and free, adventurous playing. At his side is saxophonist Melissa Aldana, who, with her powerful and distinctive tone, has become one of the most striking voices of her generation. Pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, deeply rooted in spiritual jazz, completes the ensemble alongside double bassist Linda May Han Oh – known for her rhythmic finesse – and legendary drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. In Coltrane 100: Both Directions at Once, the quintet looks both to the past and the future through reworked standards and original compositions inspired by Coltrane’s work.
