Delphine and Solange are two 25-year-old twins, both lovely and witty. Delphine, the blonde, gives dance lessons, whilst Solange, the redhead, teaches music theory. They live and breathe music just as others might daydream, and dream of finding true love just round the corner. As it happens, a troupe of fairground performers is arriving in town. And they happen to frequent the bar run by the twins’ mother. A big fair is being prepared and a dreamy sailor is searching for his ideal woman...

Jacques Demy (1931–1990) was a leading French director and a figure of the French New Wave, famous for his melancholic musicals with their vivid colours, often with music by Michel Legrand. Married to Agnès Varda, he left his mark on cinema with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967)
