Agatha, 90, leads a solitary and contented life on her ancestors’ farm in Manitoba, Canada, where she preserves and cultivates traditional seed varieties within the world she has created for herself. Despite health challenges, she continues to work her land herself using traditional techniques. She plants and harvests her fields full of watermelons, beans, flowers, herbs, and vegetables entirely by hand. With a small crew consisting entirely of women, multidisciplinary artist Amalie Atkins—Agatha’s niece—filmed her aunt’s artisanal world and captured it on 16mm film over a period of six years. Without a car, a phone, or running water, Agatha’s meditative routine and daily rituals offer a pleasant counterbalance to the fast pace of modern life.
Amalie Atkins grew up in rural Manitoba and is now active as an artist in Saskatoon. Her cinematic fables combine performance, textiles, and film into a richly layered visual world. Agatha’s Almanac is her debut feature film.
