Scarlatti, Bach & Chopin
The last time the Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt was our guest at Bozar was in 2015. She is considered one of the most respected interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach. In this recital, Hewitt plays his demanding Partita no. 4. “Hewitt’s poise, clarity of voicing, spontaneity, wonderful finger legato and palpable joy (...) is a masterclass in itself,” wrote Gramophone. She combines this masterpiece of counterpoint with virtuoso baroque sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, who – like Bach – was born in 1685. The end of the programme ripples towards Romanticism with works by Frédéric Chopin, in which Hewitt’s lyric sensibility and expressive power are displayed to the full.
