Souvenance

The music of the Tunisian oud-player and composer Anouar Brahem cannot be pigeon-holed. Jazz, folk, or world music? It doesn't fit neatly into any category. And that is more than ever the case with Brahem's latest project for quartet – consisting of bass, bass clarinet, piano, and oud – and string ensemble. With its reference to distant memories, the title of the Souvenance album (released on ECM in 2014), perfectly fits its mysterious, hypnotic, restrained music. As he presents Souvenance in Brussels, Brahem is joined by his own quartet and the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, conducted by Frank Braley.
