Along with Robert Schumann, we’re really looking forward to the spring. In the year of his marriage to Clara Wieck, Schumann composed his First Symphony, which is bursting with joy and optimism. Philippe Herreweghe, a big fan of Schumann’s work, is only too pleased to share that lust for life. Known as the ‘Spring Symphony’, it is a huge contrast to the concerto performed by the French star pianist Bertrand Chamayou: Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24, an inward-looking piece with a dramatic tone. Mozart made the orchestra into an equal player, and with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra on stage, this poignant masterpiece is in excellent hands.
