‘Ballaké Sissoko – Göksel Baktagir’

1 Mar.'19
- 20:00

Mali / Turkey

The kora master Ballaké Sissoko and the virtuoso qanun player Göksel Baktagir engage in an intimate musical conversation, fostering encounters and dialogue between two very authentic and refined worlds.

When Ballaké Sissoko and Göksel Baktagir perform together, these two virtuosos, of the kora and qanun respectively, cause quite a sensation! Ballaké Sissoko was born into a family of several generations of kora players (the kora is a 21-string lute-bridge-harp that is widely used in west Africa). At the age of 13, he joined the Ensemble Instrumental National du Mali of which his father was a founding member and director. Since then he has gone on to become an internationally-acclaimed instrumentalist, collaborating and recording albums with artists in various genres, including Toumani Diabaté, Taj Mahal, Ludovico Einaudi and Vincent Segal. In 2016, his album Musique de Nuit was nominated for a Victoire de la Musique for the world music album of the year. Göksel Baktagir, another music prodigy and a prolific composer, is one of the most famous Turkish qanun players. This instrument is played by plucking the strings and is very similar to the zither. Baktagir has built an international career, exploring new genres like jazz or New Age as well as teaching workshops all over the Mediterranean. The two artists will take to the stage together for an evening of encounters, and a cross-over between two very authentic and refined worlds.
