Matthias Goerne & Mahler

Thomas Hampson is the leading American baritone of his generation. His long, impressive career is heaving under the weight of countless awards and more than 150 recordings. Hampson’s exceptional talent for establishing a deep connection with his audience finds fertile ground in Mahler's almost mythical cycle of orchestral songs Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Afterwards, conductor Michael Schønwandt will guide the orchestra through Tchaikovsky's famous Fourth Symphony. Here, the central theme is heavily influenced by the composer's turbulent personal life, namely fate, “A force that we can only experience passively.”

For health reasons, Thomas Hampson has to cancel his participation in tomorrow evening's concert with the Belgian National Orchestra. We would like to thank Matthias Goerne, an equally eminent baritone and a great connoisseur of Mahler's lieder, for agreeing to replace him at short notice. We wish Thomas Hampson a speedy recovery.
