Beethoven's Legacy / Brewaeys Festival
Jonathan Harvey was inspired by Zen breathing to compose 80 Breaths for Tokyo, a contemplative work that explores the gentleness of music and its effects on the body and mind. The orchestra reflects the ambiguity of breathing as a creative force, both subtle, colorful, and constantly evolving.
Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, his shortest, stands out for its overflowing energy, lively rhythms, and notable absence of a slow movement, making it a sparkling, light, and sometimes even comic work.
Luc Brewaeys' Eighth Symphony, written in 2004 but unfinished at his death in 2015, was conceived as a true "orgy of sound." Inspired by Beethoven’s Eighth, it requires an impressive orchestra with many percussion instruments, including bottles!
