The American sociologist Nicholas Christakis recently predicted a new ‘roaring twenties’ that may be just around the corner. Just like 100 years ago, when the end of the First World War and eradication of Spanish flu brought an enormous sense of joy and relief, the defeat of COVID-19 could spark an unprecedented social, economic and cultural resurgence. The Belgian National Orchestra is looking ahead to this exciting new era, with a New Year Concert that, in addition to waltzes, polkas and marches composed by the Strauss family, also includes a musical ode to the 1920s.
