Simone Lamsma & Mozart / Lutosławski
The Belgian National Orchestra offers a varied programme combining Mozart's subtle, balanced and charming writing with that of 20th-century composers. Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto K 218 will be brought to life by the brilliant, expressive and intense playing of Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma. Hugh Wolff will conduct the orchestral work Icarus in Orbit, by the pioneering African-American composer George Walker. Walker depicts the fall of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and melted his wings, with a crashing whistle. In addition, the dedicated American jazz pianist and composer Anthony Davis will present Notes from the Underground, based on music by Duke Ellington. The Polish composer Lutosławski later turned his back on the folkloric style that culminated in his Concerto for Orchestra, but the work played a major role in his breakthrough in the West.
Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma replaces Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, who unfortunately had to cancel due to illness. The programme also changes slightly: Simone Lamsma will perform Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto instead of the Third.
