Áila (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) consoles Rosie (Violet Nelson), a young woman she finds barefoot and sobbing in the streets. She soon discovers that she has just escaped an assault by her boyfriend. Áila brings Rosie into her home, and, over the course of the evening, both women explore the after-effects of this traumatic event. Shot in 16mm, the film, whose title comes from an essay by Indigenous poet Billy-Ray Belcourt, reveals the necessity for Indigenous people to look out for one another in a society that’s too often indifferent to their existence.
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers is a writer, director, producer and actor. A member of the Kainai First Nation and of the Sámi from Norway, she began her career in 2011 as filmmaker and directed short movies and one feature documentary on the opioid crisis in her community. The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open is her first fiction film in co-direction with Canadian well-known director Kathleen Hepburn.

The screening will be followed by a virtual conversation with Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, moderated by Djia Mambu.
