The new Bozar Bassment concert series pushes the boundaries of electronic and experimental music. Unusual international and local artists team up to shake the foundations of the Centre for Fine Arts. Below street-level, they present brand-new material in genre-defying live performances with visuals.
Composer, pianist and DJ Akano Toto is known and loved in the Brussels club scene, and now emerges with a live project: GASY-CORE - RAZANA. Inscribed within the Malagasy diaspora through his mother, he got to know the traditional music genres salegy and tsapiky. Both linked to celebrations and family rituals honouring the dead. He juxtaposes this “heritage” with doom and gothic aesthetics, and jazz piano sounds, guitar riffs and vocals at high speed. A “broad your horizon” course for experts.
Christelle Oyiri, aka CRYSTALLMESS, can also usually be found behind a DJ booth, but presents for us the Belgian premiere of her latest live show. The Parisian artist, daughter of Ivorian and Guadeloup parents, challenges linear and Eurocentric genealogies of musical history in her work. In her own words, Oyiri works ‘between the lines’ and fearlessly allows her own life story to interact with collective (malformed) memory. She once stood next to Frank Ocean at Coachella, now she stands in front of you during Bozar Bassment.
