In May 2020, the death of George Floyd as a result of his violent arrest by several white American police officers sparked a new wave of protests against police violence and structural racism against black people. Demonstrations on an unprecedented scale were held across the world, including here in Belgium. On 7 June 2020, the Black Lives Matter demonstration brought almost 10,000 protesters to the streets of Brussels. For many, this was a historic moment as police violence against Black people and North Africans is regularly reported and condemned in this country.
On the occasion of the Place Poelart 7 June 2020, Black Lives Matter exhibition at the Théâtre National from 9 November 2021 to 26 February 2022, Bozar Afropolitan is inviting five photographers who immortalised the event to participate in a round table discussion at the Centre for Fine Arts. They will be discussing the spirit of the demonstration and the hopes and expectations it raised. They will also be looking at different visions of the role of the photographer in relation to a movement such as Black Lives Matter and the protean power of their images.
