Christophe Chassol is many things: an explosive musician, indefinable composer and inspiring presenter, but certainly not someone who fits well into pigeonholes. At the ensemble Miroirs Étendus’ request, he has focused on his relationship with Steve Reich. Chassol’s creativity is located in the wake of minimal music and, like Reich, he draws inspiration from his direct surroundings. Reich made music from the noise, bustle and ephemeral voices of his home city of New York in City Life. Guided by this pioneering piece of music, Chassol – who is fascinated by birdsong and street sounds – set ‘his’ city, Paris, to music and images. So we are left with just one question: what would Brussels sound like?
