As part of the Festival of the New European Bauhaus
In the heart of São Paulo stands the legendary skyscraper Edificio Copan by Oscar Niemeyer. A world of its own, with 5000 residents, 100 workers, 20 lifts and its own postcode. Director Carine Wallauer, herself a resident of Copan, paints an intimate and impressionistic portrait of life within the building’s walls. Do not expect a film about the history of Copan, but rather an imagining of a society torn apart by polarised politics. All of this set in a utopian architectural gem that once aimed to be an egalitarian community. How much of that is still left?
Carine Wallauer is a director, cinematographer and visual artist based in Brazil. Her artistic production moves between technique and experimentation with images, and is present on digital platforms and in internationally respected print publications. She has participated in group exhibitions in galleries in Italy, Canada, Turkey, and the USA, as well as solo exhibitions in Brazil. Her work is part of the Joaquim Paiva collection and is held in the collections of MAM - Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio Grande do Sul. She has published three photobooks: Visões elevadas de eros, O vazio é um espelho, and Quando o coração é um caçador solitário — all of which are sold out and are part of the collection at the IMS - Instituto Moreira Salles Library in São Paulo.
In addition to her work as a cinematographer on projects by fellow filmmakers, she wrote, directed, and photographed COPAN, her debut feature film. The film was awarded Best Feature at the 30th edition of It’s All True – International Documentary Film Festival and was officially selected for the competitive sections of renowned festivals such as CPH:DOX 2025 – Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival and FICG – Guadalajara International Film Festival.
The film was made with the support of Ancine, FSA, BRDE, PROAC SP, CNC Cinema du Monde, Institute Français, Region Nouvelle Aquitaine Département de la Charente Maritime.
